Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity fencing teams suffered hard-fought defeats against the visiting Hackley School on January 9 at the Fonseca Center.

The girls shined in foil, securing an impressive 6-3 victory behind strong performances from captain Neha Arg and starter Sophie Neale. The duo combined for wins in five bouts. Substitute Noon Son also earned a victory.

In épée, the Panthers battled through some injuries and illnesses to remain competitive in every bout. Squad captain An qi Shen and starter Yulin Chen each recorded wins in the 9-2 setback. Masters wrapped up the day with a 5-4 defeat in saber. Starter Audrey Lockett recorded two victories, while Sophia Viscarello and Michelle Wei each won a bout.

The boys also excelled in foil, notching a 5-4 decision. Squad captain Noah Crooks played a crucial role, scoring a 5-4 touch victory to set up a match-sealing effort from standout Petar Janicijevic.

In épée, the Panthers suffered a 5-4 loss. Starter Daniel Berov won all of his bouts and was aided by substitute August Grossman. It was the same outcome in saber, as Masters dropped another tough 5-4 match.
