The Zetetics Engineering and Robotics Team swept every major award at the Freeport VEX Robotics Qualifier on February 3 in Long Island, NY.

The team’s Squad A won the Excellence Award for Best Overall Team. This recognition is the highest award given at any VEX robotics competition, according to John Chiodo, team coach.

Squad A is led by Louisa Chiodo and includes Mark Attar, Gabrielle Chernomorsky, Cole Feuer, Jonas Kolker and Brandon Zazza, plus Middle School interns Ella Dundas, Theo Mayer and Rebecca Troy.

“The Excellence Award is presented to the squad that exemplifies overall excellence in creating a high-quality VEX robotics program,” Mr. Chiodo says. “This team also needs to be a strong contender in numerous award categories, including excellence in engineering, teamwork, professionalism, sportsmanship, ethics, creativity, quality of their build, and energy and grace – whether winning or losing.”

Not to be outdone, Squad B won the Robotic Skills Challenge. Squad B is led by Teddy Hoisington and includes Zach Battleman, Alex Feiner, Evelyn Sabety and Henry Williams, along with Middle School interns Sam Chernomorsky and Silas Rosenfeld.

Unlike regular tournament play, Mr. Chiodo says, the Robotic Skills Challenge pits a single robot against the clock in both driver skills and autonomous operation.

“We’ve never had a robotic skills winner before,” he adds. “This is a challenge that has nothing to do with the luck of whom you draw as an alliance partner. It is all about how well a squad operates on its own.”

Each of the top eight teams from the qualifying matches held in the morning chose two alliance partners for the elimination matches held in the afternoon, according to Mr. Chiodo. Squad B was a member of the three-team alliance that was named Tournament Champion.

Mr. Chiodo noted that both squads also qualified for the Southern New York State Championship, which will be held on March 3 at The Harvey School.
